For fifteen years Cara Weaver has tried to follow the teachings of her husband. She's been an obedient, submissive, head-covering pastor's wife, but when the Reverend Weaver's abuse reaches the point where she can take no more, there's only one old friend left to help her escape home to the Ozark Mountains. And once she's there, she realizes that physical escape was the easiest part of her path to freedom. Warning contains scenes of spousal abuse and rape.

I fully expected this book to suck. It's self-published, after all. And, I usually avoid this genre like the plague... I'm a dude who reads sci-fi and thrillers.

But, I devoured this damn thing in a single day; I could not put it down. It pulls you in immediately with the first few paragraphs... It's extremely well-written and edited. The pacing is great. Suspenseful at times. Cara is a great character. A lesser author would have written a story about a meek and subservient member of this 'cult' who slowly comes to realize she is being duped. But, Grim's method is much better: From the first paragraph the reader KNOWS that Cara is smart, sophisticated, and cynical enough to realize she's in a cult. She stays in the situation for many reasons, but it isn't because of ignorance. And, this makes for a much more interesting character.

I grew up in the Ozarks, and I had a lot of experiences with these doiley-wearing, sanctimonious, Mennonite-wannabes. Maybe it's just an Ozark-thing... maybe the rest of the country doesn't quite understand or even know about the sub-culture Grim writes about. But, for me, these character leaped off the page and were quite vivid.

I've read a couple of the 1-star comments. They're full of s***. There is nothing 'unchristian' about writing a realistic piece of fiction. I reckon Jesus would much rather read Grim's book than the sterilized crap that passes for 'christian' literature nowadays.

Grim, keep writing. Screw the publishers. If you keep churning out stuff like this, they will be coming to you.

This book was so freak en good..... Definatly a favorite. It really helps knowing how to handle things and it helps to know how to get help
The story behind the book is something that can happen in real life and those are the kind of books I like. I felt her (Cara)pain through out the whole book and her good moments made me feel happy as well, I love how I was able to place myself in some of the scenarios. It was also nice reading and being familiar with lots of the places mentioned in the book. I look forward to reading more books from Lisa Grim.
I absolutely loved this book! The story pulls you in from from beginning to end, I didn't want it to end! Can't wait for more from Lisa Grim!
This book was a trifle disapointing. I happen to know this young woman, and had expected a broader look at the "church cult". Thought the characters were a little shallow and too much emphasis on the physical-not the mental/emotional damage done to these poor unselfconfident women.
I thought this book was under Christian fiction. Her husband was the member of a cult, not a Christian. She left him, rightfully so, but seemed to mock God throughout the book "like 'doing it' in church".
In Singing Silence Lisa Grim takes us on an emotional ride exploring an abusive relationship and one woman's struggle to overcome.
The story follows Cara Weaver, who is married to a pastor of a small Arkansas church that in many ways resembles a cult. Her husband, the Rev. Weaver,
is abusive and uses his position as pastor to coerce Cara and others in his church into situations where he can mentally or physically abuse them.
The story starts out dark, but gets progressively brighter as it goes on. A thought provoking tale with a heartwarming ending. I was thoroughly
engrossed throughout the book. It draws you in and you'll find yourself wanting to read just one more chapter at the end of each previous one.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone who likes books with depth and feeling. Singing Silence will leave you hoping for more books from Lisa Grim.
Should not be in christian fiction. Not a christian book. God is mentioned many times as main character questions His existence. Explicit rape and sex.
No reconciliation to God, however the main character does reconcile to a statue of Jesus in Eureka Springs which has no christian meaning.
